Cuban-born virtuoso Prats makes his Boston debut with a program of Chopin: 24 Preludes op.28 and the Andante Spianato & Grand Polonaise, Scriabin: 24 Preludes op.11, and Stravinsky: 3 Scenes from Petrouchka.

Hailed as a long-lost virtuoso in the grand tradition, Prats just released a stunning Decca Records debut with a live recital in Zaragoza, Spain. This is but the first of a number of exciting new Decca discs soon to be released, growing the sensational story of this unique artist and his return to the international stage. His 2007 concert at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts under the auspices of the Miami International Piano Festival was recorded on the VAI label. It was the release of this live performance that reawakened great interest in his career and resulted in invitations to perform at the Verbier Festival, in Amsterdam?s Concertgebouw for four consecutive years to overwhelming response, at Le Roque D?Antheron, and with Pavo Jarvi and l?Orchestre de Paris.

At the age of 21, Prats won the Grand Prix at the prestigious ?Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud? piano competition in Paris (1977), also receiving special prizes for the best interpretation of Maurice Ravel and Andr? Jolivet. He began performing widely, and made a recital LP for Deutsche Gramophon.?However, visa restrictions meant that big opportunities in the West were limited and the young Cuban chose to stay with his family over a career abroad. For more than 30 years, Prats effectively disappeared from the international piano scene. His recent relocation to the U.S. has allowed that career to once again flourish.

Prats was born in Camag?ey, Cuba. His teach?ers included such illustrious figures as Cesar Perez Sentenar, Barbara D?az Alea, Margot Rojas and Alfredo Diez. Upon graduation from the National Arts College he was awarded a scholarship to the Tchaikovsky Conserva?tory in Moscow where he studied under Rudolf Kerer. He continued his higher piano education at the Paris Conserva?tory and at the Hochschule f?r Musik und K?nstler?in Vienna with Paul Badura Skoda and later with Magda Tagliaferro in Paris, also receiving master classes from Witold Malcuzcynski in Warsaw.

A consummate performer, Prats? concert tours have taken him throughout Europe, North, South and Central America, China, Japan and Korea. He has performed as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic in London, the BBC Orchestra, EOS Orchestra of New York and the Dallas Symphony. In Mexico he has per?formed with the Mexico City Orchestra, Ofunam Orchestra, and the Jalapa Orches?tra. In South America he appeared with the Colombia Philharmonic and Venezuela?s ?S?mon Bolivar? Orchestra.

His extensive repertoire includes most major works for piano and orchestra and his diverse recital repertoire features works such as Bach?s Well Tempered Clavier, Suites and Partitas, all the Mozart Sonatas and many Beethoven Sonatas; nearly the en?tirety of Chopin?s works and all of Franz Liszt?s Sonatas, Etudes and the Hungarian Rhapsodies. It also includes Ravel, Debussy, and Hector Villa-Lobos. He is the master of the Cuban classical music repertoire from the XVIII and XIX centuries, as well as the most important compositions by contemporary Cuban composers such as Carlos Fari?as and Harold Gramatges.

He has recorded for a number of major labels: Path? Marconi (EMI France), Deutsche Grammophon, ASV, IMP, and Musical Heritage. His discography includes the first-ever recording of the 24 Preludes and The Satanic Poem by A. Scriabin for EMI France, works by Beethoven, the Grieg Piano Concerto, the complete works for piano and orchestra by Rachmaninov, the Chopin Concertos and a wide variety of Cuban and Spanish music.

In the last few weeks Prats opened the 2012 Miami International Piano Festival Season with two different marathon recital programs in one day on March 4th?and performed his fourth consecutive recital at the Concertgebouw. He has been featured in the Miami International Piano Festival regularly since his debut in 2007. The Piano Masters Series is proud to present this unique and compelling artist in his Boston debut.

Prats has been the grateful recipient of support from Patrons of Excep?tional Artists since 2006, whose assistance also made this concert possible.
