Flame Retardants on the Rise in Furniture

Couches and household textiles remain a major source of retardants, which can build up in our bodies and the environment. Some of the semi-volatile chemicals have been linked to cancer and altered hormones in children

Flame retardants in U.S. furniture are on the rise, with a new study finding them in nearly all couches tested.

The findings, published today, confirm that household furniture remains a major source of a variety of flame retardants, some of which have been building up in people?s bodies and in the environment.

In the new tests, three out of every four couches purchased before 2005 contained the chemicals, with a now-banned compound in 39 percent. For newer couches, 94 percent contained flame retardants, nearly all next-generation compounds with little known about their potential health effects.

"More furniture appears to be treated with flame retardants today than, say, 15 years ago," said Heather Stapleton, an environmental chemist at Duke University and lead author of the project, which also included researchers from the University of California, Berkeley and Boston University.

In a separate study also published today, researchers found that dust in California homes is contaminated with levels of flame retardants that exceed health risk guidelines developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Some of the chemicals have been linked to cancer, altered hormones or neurological effects in lab animals, fetuses and children. Whether there are health risks from many of the newer flame retardants, however, is largely unknown, and most furniture does not carry labels that provide information to consumers.

"I am concerned by the rise in use and diversity of flame retardants on the market because we have very little information on their toxicity and potential effects on the general population, particularly vulnerable subpopulations such as pregnant women and young children," said Ami Zota, who studies flame retardants and reproductive health at the University of California, San Francisco. She did not participate in the new research.

The scientists discovered one chemical in sofas that had never been reported before as a flame retardant.

"There is little to no information about the potential health effects of these new flame retardants in the peer-reviewed literature," said Heather Patisaul of North Carolina State University, who studies endocrine-disrupting chemicals but was not involved in the research.

A spokesperson from the American Chemistry Council, which represents flame retardant manufacturers, said ?this study confirms what we would expect to find: Furniture manufacturers use approved flame retardants to meet established fire safety standards, which help save lives. There is no data in this study that indicate that the levels of flame retardants found would cause any human health problems."

The use of flame retardants is traced to a California standard adopted in the 1970s, which mandates that foam used in furniture cushions must withstand a 12-second exposure to a small, open flame. Because the market in California is so large, much of the nation's furniture is manufactured with flame retardants to meet that standard.

The scientists tested 102 couches purchased between 1985 and 2010 in the first study that has examined flame retardants that have come onto the market since 2005. The foam samples were not randomly selected, so the results might not represent the United States as a whole, the authors said in their article published in the journal Environmental Science and Toxicology.

In all, 85 percent contained flame retardants. In tests of couches purchased over the past seven years, the chemicals were even more prevalent: 94 percent compared with 75 percent for those purchased between 1985 and 2004.

Tris, a suspected human carcinogen that was banned for use in baby pajamas in the 1970s, was the most prevalent compound in the couches; it was found in 41 percent.

The separate study from the Massachusetts-based Silent Spring Institute, published in the same journal, found two different mixtures of Tris in dust in each of the 16 California homes studied.

Pet van helps feed Gainesville homeless' pets | WUFT News

When Elizabeth Howard went to an event supporting the homeless about six years ago, she was thinking about pet food.

?I knew I wanted to do something to help the homeless people, but I?m an animal rights activist and have been for quite a while now,? she said. ?So I thought, ?Well, OK, I?ll get the pet food for the homeless people for their dogs and cats.??

Howard started the Home Van Pet Care Project five years ago, a companion to the Home Van, a nonprofit that feeds the homeless.

She said she started with ?one little bag? of pet food someone donated. Now, the Gainesville nonprofit donates 100 pounds each of dog food and cat food every week.

After following the Home Van with her own car for awhile, Howard began distributing the pet food ? packed in gallon-size Ziploc bags ? on Wednesdays at the library.

Howard said she isn?t sure how much longer she can sustain the program, though. The nonprofit needs more hands to pack bags of food and deliver them, she said.

?It?s a little scary right now,? she said. ?I don?t know which way to go with some of this.?

Howard said?although it?s hard to care for pets, the homeless need the love and companionship pets provide. She emphasized because Home Van Pet Care is?a type of food bank, the food it provides is only a supplement and not enough to sustain pets.

?We try to get everybody to find out where they can get more food and how they can feed their animals well,? she said.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Animal wranglers involved in the making of "The Hobbit" movie trilogy say the production company is responsible for the deaths of up to 27 animals, largely because they were kept at a farm filled with bluffs, sinkholes and other "death traps."

The American Humane Association, which is overseeing animal welfare on the films, says no animals were harmed during the actual filming. But it also says the wranglers' complaints highlight shortcomings in its oversight system, which monitors film sets but not the facilities where the animals are housed and trained.

A spokesman for trilogy director Peter Jackson on Monday acknowledged that horses, goats, chickens and one sheep died at the farm near Wellington where about 150 animals were housed for the movies, but he said some of the deaths were from natural causes.

The spokesman, Matt Dravitzki, agreed that the deaths of two horses were avoidable, and said the production company moved quickly to improve conditions after they died.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the first movie in the planned $500 million trilogy, is scheduled to launch with a red-carpet premiere Nov. 28 in Wellington and will open at theaters in the U.S. and around the world in December.

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says it's planning protests at the premieres in New Zealand, the U.S. and the U.K.

Kathy Guillermo, a senior vice president at PETA, said whistleblowers on The Hobbit contacted the organization after it had taken an active role in exposing problems on other movie sets. The organization sent a letter to Jackson last week outlining its concerns.

"We want to send a clear message to Hollywood that they need to be very careful when using animals and take all the precautions that need to be taken," Guillermo said.

The Associated Press spoke to four wranglers who said the farm near Wellington was unsuitable for horses because it was peppered with bluffs, sinkholes and broken-down fencing. They said they repeatedly raised concerns about the farm with their superiors and the production company, owned by Warner Bros., but it continued to be used. They say they want their story aired publicly now to prevent similar deaths in the future.

One wrangler said that over time he buried three horses, as well as about six goats, six sheep and a dozen chickens. The wranglers say two more horses suffered severe injuries but survived.

Wrangler Chris Langridge said he was hired as a horse trainer in November 2010, overseeing 50 or so horses, but immediately became concerned that the farm was full of "death traps." He said he tried to fill in some of the sinkholes, made by underground streams, and even brought in his own fences to keep the horses away from the most dangerous areas. Ultimately, he said, it was an impossible task.

He said horses run at speeds of up to 30 mph and need to be housed on flat land: "It's just a no-brainer."

The first horse to die, he said, was a miniature named Rainbow.

"When I arrived at work in the morning, the pony was still alive but his back was broken. He'd come off a bank at speed and crash-landed," Langridge said. "He was in a bad state."

Rainbow, who had been slated for use as a hobbit horse, was euthanized. A week later, a horse named Doofus got caught in some fencing and sliced open its leg. That horse survived, but Langridge said he'd had enough.

He and his wife, Lynn, who was also working as a wrangler, said they quit in February 2011. The following month, they wrote an email to Brigitte Yorke, the Hobbit trilogy's unit production manager, outlining their concerns.

Chris Langridge said he responded to Yorke's request for more information but never received a reply after that.

Wrangler Johnny Smythe said that soon after Langridge left, a horse named Claire was found dead, its head submerged in a stream after it fell over a bluff. After that, he said, the horses were put in stables, where a third horse died.

Smythe said no autopsy was performed on the horse, which was named Zeppelin. Veterinary records say the horse died of natural causes, from a burst blood vessel, but Smythe said the horse was bloated and its intestines were full of a yellow liquid; he believes it died of digestive problems caused by new feed.

Smythe said the six goats and six sheep he buried died after falling into sinkholes, contracting worms or getting new feed after the grass was eaten. He said the chickens were often left out of their enclosure and that a dozen were mauled to death by dogs on two separate occasions.

Smythe said he was fired in October 2011 after arguing with his boss about the treatment of the animals.

A fourth wrangler, who didn't want to be named because she feared it could jeopardize her future employment in the industry, said another horse, Molly, got caught in a fence and ripped her leg open, suffering permanent injuries.

Dravitzki, the spokesman for Peter Jackson, said the production company reacted swiftly after the first two horses died, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars upgrading housing and stable facilities in early 2011.

"We do know those deaths were avoidable and we took steps to make sure it didn't happen again," he said.

Dravitzki said Zeppelin died of a burst blood vessel and that he knew only of three goats, one sheep and about eight chickens that had died aside from that. He said two of the goats died in a cold snap but the third, like the sheep, was old and had likely died of natural causes. He said the chicken maulings were the result of careless staff oversight.

The American Humane Association said in its report on "An Unexpected Journey" that it investigated the farm at the production company's request. Dravitzki said the company contacted the AHA after Smythe alleged mistreatment of animals.

Mark Stubis, an association spokesman, said it investigated the farm in August 2011, months after the first deaths.

"We made safety recommendations to the animals' living areas. The production company followed our recommendations and upgraded fence and farm housing, among other things," the group said.

Dravitzki said the company had already made many of the recommended changes by the time the AHA made them.

Stubis said the association acknowledges that what happens off-set remains a blind spot in its oversight.

"We would love to be able to monitor the training of animals and the housing of animals," Stubis said. "It's something we are looking into. We want to make sure the animals are treated well all the time."

Dravitzki questioned the timing of the allegations with the premiere so close but said the producers are investigating all the claims "and are attempting to speak with all parties involved to establish the truth."

He said the company no longer leases the farm and has no animals left on the property. He said he didn't know if animals will be needed for future filming in the trilogy, but added that Jackson himself adopted three of the pigs used.

Hollywood has made animal welfare a stated priority for years.

In March, HBO canceled the horse racing series "Luck" after three thoroughbred horses died during production. The network said it canceled the show because it could not guarantee against future accidents.

Judge accepts FTC's $22.5 million fine against Google

In August, the Federal Trade Commission announced it was going to fine Google $22.5 million?for tracking?users of Apple's Safari web browser. This week, a federal judge allowed the amount of that fine to go forward.

Bloomberg reports that U.S. District Judge Susan Illston made the decision to approve the fine in a San Francisco courtroom late on Friday. The actual amount of the FTC penalty was opposed by a group called Consumer Watchdog, which felt that the amount of the fine was not enough.

Consumer Watchdog also tried to make the case that the $22.5 million penalty was a clue as to what the commission might do for its separate antitrust case against Google. However, it appears that Judge Illston didn't buy that when she approved the fine.

Back in August, the FTC said that Google "placed an advertising tracking cookie on the computers of Safari users who visited sites within Google's DoubleClick advertising network" during parts of 2011 and 2012. At the same time, Google told users of the web browser that they could shut down tracking?because of?the default settings in Safari. Besides paying the fine, Google must agree to remove the tracking cookies for all Safari users by February 2014.

Weather offers mixed bag for Ivory Coast main-crop cocoa

(Reuters) - Abundant rains mixed with sunny spells last week augured well for the main crop in some regions of the world's top cocoa producer, but the start of the dry season has raised concerns in other areas, farmers and analysts said on Monday.

Ivory Coast's main crop season opened on October 3 and harvesting is picking up as fears that hitches in the implementation of a sweeping reform of the sector could affect supplies have failed to materialise.

The dry season, which runs from mid-November to the end of March, is characterised by strong dry winds which could affect the size and quality of beans.

In the western region of Daloa, which produces a quarter of Ivory Coast's national output, farmers said there was no rainfall for a second week running.

Farmers said they feared that there would be beans shortage by next year if the drought persists.

"It is very hot and it has been two weeks now since we last had rains," said Desire M'Bra who farms on the outskirts of Daloa. "With this heat, and if the drought continues for several weeks, there will not be much cocoa from this zone next year."

In the western region of Bouafle, farmers said the weather was very hot and there has not been any rain in three weeks. "We are afraid ... If this continues, the quality of the cocoa will be bad next year and the harvest will be small," said Edouard Zan, who farms in the area.

The situation was different in the western region of Soubre, in the heart of the Ivorian cocoa belt, where an analyst reported 37mm of rainfall, up from 31mm the previous week.

"It rained for three days and the trees received abundant water, which makes us think that the main crop harvest will be long and bountiful," said Koffi Kouame, who farms in Soubre.

"There are plenty of pods on trees and the harvest will be abundant until the end of the year," Kouame added.

In the southeastern region of Aboisso, an analyst reported 3.4mm of rain last week, compared with 1.8mm the previous week. In the eastern region of Abengourou, another analyst reported 30mm of rain, compared with no rain the week before.

Similar growing conditions were reported in the coastal region of San Pedro, where farmers reported two abundant rain spells.

"It rained much on Saturday and Sunday. It was good for the trees just before the dry season begins," said farmer Labbe Zoungrana.

Virgin wins Heathrow slots and targets Scotland

LONDON (Reuters) - Virgin Atlantic has won all of the London Heathrow take-off and landing slots that British Airways was forced to give up after the acquisition of bmi, and it aims to use them to compete on flights to Scotland.

The airline, which has long wanted to compete head-to-head with British Airways (BA) on short-haul domestic flights, said on Monday it planned to run multiple daily flights from Edinburgh and Aberdeen to Heathrow using the new slots.

Richard Branson's airline first announced plans to compete with BA on domestic routes in August, when it said it would operate three daily flights from London's Heathrow to Manchester from March 2013.

The addition of the new slots, which became available following the acquisition of bmi by BA's owner IAG , gives Virgin Atlantic additional firepower.

"We have fought hard for the right to fly short haul and take a strong challenge to British Airways within these shores," said Virgin Atlantic Chief Executive Steve Ridgway.

"Passengers can look forward to a great short haul service with us but most importantly reap the benefits from the re-injection of vital competition we can provide on these routes."

Rivalry between Virgin Atlantic, which is part-owned by Singapore Airlines , and BA dates back more than 20 years to the so-called "dirty tricks" affair, when Virgin accused BA of conducting a smear campaign.

That ended with BA being forced to make a public apology and pay damages to Branson and Virgin. There have since been price wars, allegations of price-fixing and public rows over the size of passenger beds.

How to play iTunes music and videos on your Android phone

Are you looking for a method to get your iTunes music onto your Android phone? Join us as we run through the process and offer you a choice of solutions that will have you enjoying all that iTunes content on your Android tablet or smartphone today.

Apple?s iTunes offers over 28 million songs, more than 1 million podcasts, and a bunch of TV shows, movies, music videos, and audiobooks. It?s all a part of Apple?s seamless ecosystem, but what happens if you want to leave the walled garden? Do you have to leave all your entertainment behind? We all know that Apple and Google don?t play nice in the marketplace, but what does that mean for people with a big iTunes collection and an Android device?

Don?t worry. There are ways to get your iTunes content onto your Android smartphone or tablet. We?re going to outline some methods you might try and suggest a couple of apps that can help.

What do you want?

To begin, you?ll need to work out what?s important to you. Do you just want to move the content out of iTunes and make it available for your Android device, or do you want to continue to use iTunes and be able to sync content to your Android phone? Are you just going after music files or do you want a solution for movies too? Do you have older DRM protected files? How dirty are you prepared to get those hands?

Up until 2009, Apple sold DRM protected music files through iTunes, which means they will only work on an iOS device. If your song is labeled ?Protected? in iTunes then it falls under this banner. You?ll also find that movies and TV episodes are still DRM protected.

Removing DRM protection

In typical Apple style you can ?upgrade? old DRM protected songs to remove the restrictions, but they?ll charge you 30 cents per song to do it. If you?re willing to pay that amount, then look for the Upgrade to iTunes Plus option under Quick Links in the iTunes store. There?s no option to do this for movies or TV shows. If you have a lot of tracks in this category then the iTunes Match service might be more cost effective at $25. It will also upgrade your songs to DRM free status.

You can always find software to convert your iTunes files. There are a lot of options out there. You might try something like Tunebite or Aimersoft DRM Media Converter. There is also a popular free option called Requiem, which is designed specifically to remove DRM protection from iTunes files. Just make sure you get the right version to match your iTunes version.

We?ll take a look at how to play iTunes music on your Android device now, but remember that none of the following methods will allow you to copy or sync those DRM protected files.

The manual move

Simple, but tedious, the manual move is a straightforward method if you just want a few choice tracks. Connect your Android phone and select USB Mass Storage Mode from the Notifications drop down on your phone or the pop-up menu on your computer. This method varies from device to device and it could be labeled differently on yours. Once you?ve found it, you should be able to go to Computer on your PC and see your device listed. Browse to the Music folder on your Android and then you can select files directly from iTunes and press ?Ctrl+C? to copy them and then ?Ctrl+V? to paste them into the folder on your phone or tablet. If you?re on a Mac, download the official?Android File Transfer tool to move files.

iTunes to Google Music

Another option is Google Music. You can move your iTunes music into your Google Music account in the cloud and then you?ll be able to access it anywhere with any Android device or on the Web. You?ll need to sign into Google Music, download the Music Manager, and install it. When it is installed and starts up, it will ask where you store your music and you?ll see an iTunes option. Select iTunes, hit Next, and then choose ?Upload all songs and playlists,? or you can select individual playlists. You can also tick the box to include podcasts if you value those. There?s even an option to automatically upload songs that you add to iTunes in future.

To access your songs on your Android device you just need the Google Play Music app. With it, you can stream all your songs from Google Music in the cloud over Wi-Fi or your mobile network. You also have the option to make songs available offline by downloading them to the device.

DoubleTwist

DoubleTwist is designed to give you a central repository for all of your music, photos, and videos. It?s very simple to use. Start by downloading the desktop and Android versions of the software from the DoubleTwist website. Fire up the software on your computer and allow it to import your iTunes content. You can import your playlists, ratings, music and videos from iTunes. You can then sync your content to your smartphone or tablet via USB.

You can splash out $5 to get AirSync which will enable you to sync your content over Wi-Fi. You can sync music, including ratings, play counts, playlists, videos, and photos between your Mac/PC and your Android device. You can also pay $5 for the Music Lover upgrade if you want a premium equalizer and album artwork.

iSyncr

If DoubleTwist doesn?t serve your needs, for $4, you can get iSyncr. It?works directly with iTunes and syncs your music to your Android device via USB or Wi-Fi. You can also sync playlists, artwork, ratings, play counts, skip counts, last played date, and last skipped date. The service goes both ways so you can also sync any new MP3s on your Android to your iTunes library.

You?ll want to use iSyncr with a decent Android media player app. We suggest Rocket Music Player. The free version is good, but the premium version is only $4 and it adds some great extras, like an expanded EQ and support for more formats from ALAC to FLAC, and even WMA and WAV.

2013 Tournament of Roses Parade to include six Cobb students

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Music for All recently selected six Cobb County high school musicians to be a part of the Bands of America Honor Band in the 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade.

According to Cobb County schools, hundreds of students across the nation applied. The parade has become a New Years Day tradition in Southern California. This year will be the 124th run. Upon travelling to California, the students from three Cobb schools will spend a week participating in rehearsals, listening to performances in Disneyland and marching in the parade.

The selected students include Samantha Stammen from Allatoona High, Lena Paradiso, Ethan Thompson, Rachel Thompson and David Boughter of Harrison High, and Walker Cook from Walton High.
