Storms, drought overshadow UN climate talks

World climate change negotiators faced warnings Thursday that a string of extreme weather events around the globe show urgent action on emission cuts is needed as they opened new talks in Bangkok.

The week-long meeting in the Thai capital, which was devastated by major floods last year, aims to prepare the ground for a meeting of ministers under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Doha starting in November.

"This meeting opens in the immediate aftermath of a deadly typhoon in the Republic of Korea and a hurricane that hit near New Orleans on the seventh anniversary of Katrina -- powerful reminders of the urgent need to lower greenhouse gas emissions," said Marlene Moses of Nauru, who chairs the Alliance of Small Island States.

For small islands particularly vulnerable to climate change, "development prospects, viability and survival hang in the balance", she warned.

Some experts believe the UN target to limit the rise in global average temperatures to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) is already unattainable.

At least 19 people were killed this week by the most powerful typhoon to hit South Korea in almost a decade and thousands of people were evacuated in New Orleans as Hurricane Isaac pounded the southern US city.

In the Philippines, storms and flooding from torrential rains killed at least 170 people in August, while the US Midwest breadbasket is reeling from the worst drought in more than 50 years.

"Climate change and typhoons or droughts like in the United States are interlinked," said UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres.

"These strong weather events will occur more frequently and more intensely but they are not caused by climate change. The frequency and intensity is affected by climate change," she told reporters.

Scientists hesitate about pinning extreme weather events to climate change, which is a longer-term phenomenon.

But they also note that worse droughts, floods and storms are consistent with models that link disruption to Earth's climate system with heat-trapping fossil-fuel emissions.

They also point to other evidence that climate change is on the march, including the announcement this week that sea ice in the Arctic has shrunk to a record seasonal low this summer.

No major breakthroughs are expected at the Bangkok event, an informal meeting of senior officials from UNFCCC member states, which number 193.

But delegates aim to make some progress on the long road set out in Durban in December to negotiating an accord that would from 2020 bring all major greenhouse-gas emitters under a single legal roof for the first time.

If approved as scheduled in 2015, the pact would become the prime weapon in the fight against climate change.

In the meantime, negotiators face the challenge of reaching an agreement on a second commitment period for the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, whose first roster of legally-binding carbon curbs expires at the end of this year.

Developing countries meanwhile will pressure rich nations to provide financing and technology to help them adapt to the impacts of climate change.

"We need massively increased finance for adaptation and for action to reduce emissions and we need to set up a proper international co-ordination process to deliver resources for adaptation to those in most need," said the chair of the Least Developed Countries group, Pa Ousman Jarju of Gambia.

"We cannot live with these issues being deferred until a new agreement is negotiated in 2015 and that would not even come into effect in 2020," he said.

(AP) ? The U.N. nuclear agency has created a special Iran Task Force of nuclear weapons experts, intelligence analysts and other specialists focused on probing allegations that Tehran has been ? or is ? secretly working on developing atomic arms, according to an internal document shared with The Associated Press.

The announcement from the International Atomic Energy Agency says the elite squad started work Aug. 10. Dated Wednesday, the International Atomic Energy Agency statement says the unit will concentrate on implementing IAEA agreements with Iran, allowing it to monitor its nuclear activities as mandated by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

It also says it will focus on "relevant" IAEA and U.N Security Council resolutions on Iran. Both have demanded that Tehran stop activities that could be used to make nuclear weapons and cooperate with the agency's investigation of suspicions Tehran worked on nuclear weapons.

But while drawing together its best experts, the new task force will have no more power regarding inspections of Iran's known or suspected nuclear sites than previous IAEA inspectors did.

Agency attempts to visit a site at Iran's Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran have documented IAEA limitations. For months, satellite images have recorded what the International Atomic Energy Agency suspects is an attempt to sanitize the site of suspected work on explosive charges used to detonate a warhead. At the same time, Iran has repeatedly rebuffed agency efforts for access ? including last Friday.

The most recent satellite images now show what diplomats last week said appears to be pink material shrouding buildings apparently linked to the alleged experiments, effectively blinding agency attempts to monitor a site that they have been kept from visiting. The diplomats demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the IAEA's Iran investigation.

Iran says such allegations are based on evidence fabricated by the United States and Israel and insists its nuclear program is meant only for making reactor fuel, medical isotopes and peaceful research. But it refuses to give up uranium enrichment, which can produce both reactor fuel and the core of nuclear warheads, despite offers of fuel from abroad. And it has stonewalled an IAEA probe into its alleged weapons work for more than four years, increasing concerns that it has something to hide.

Creating a unit focused on only one country is an unusual move for the IAEA, reflecting the urgency the U.N. nuclear watchdog is attaching to Iran amid fears that it is moving closer to the ability to make nuclear weapons, despite its denial. With diplomatic efforts to engage Tehran on its nuclear activities stalemated ? and Israel warning that it will not tolerate an Iran armed with atomic arms ? concerns are growing that time is running short to defuse tensions peacefully

Israel is particularly worried about a fortified bunker at Fordo, where Iran has begun producing uranium enriched to a level closer to the grade used in nuclear weapons than its main stockpile of fuel-grade material. About 70 kilometers (40 miles) south of Tehran, Fordo has about 800 centrifuges operating so far, enriching to a 20-percent level, and continues assembling others without operating them ? diplomats say that close to 3,000 are now fully or partially screwed together, including hundreds over the past three months

In Tehran, Iran's IAEA envoy, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, told reporters Tuesday that his country will "not suspend enrichment activities, even for a second."

Diplomats had told the AP last week that the IAEA was forming a special Iran team. The announcement confirming that information was forwarded Wednesday by a diplomat who demanded anonymity because he was not authorized to share confidential and internal IAEA documents. A phone call seeking comment from Soltanieh went to his voice mail.

Instead of focusing only one country, agency experts up to now have been tasked with following dozens of nations as they look for signs indicating secret attempts to make nuclear weapons.

Some IAEA officials feel that means that they often spend an inordinate amount of time monitoring countries that are unlikely to engage in such activities ? Western European nations, for instance ? meaning that not enough attention is paid to potential proliferators.

One of the diplomats who spoke to the AP last week said the Iran team will be comprised of about 20 experts drawn from the main IAEA pool.

The IAEA announcement said the squad will be headed by Massimo Aparo. A nuclear engineer, Aparo is an IAEA veteran who has held numerous senior positions linked to nonproliferation within and outside of the IAEA.

The agency said he will be reporting to IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts, the head of the agency's nuclear inspectors and the agency's point man on Iran.

Advanced CT scans accurately assess coronary blockages

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? An ultra-fast, 320-detector computed tomography (CT) scanner can accurately sort out which people with chest pain need -- or don't need -- an invasive procedure such as cardiac angioplasty or bypass surgery to restore blood flow to the heart, according to an international study. Results of the study, which involved 381 patients at 16 hospitals in eight countries, are scheduled to be presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich, Germany, on August 28.

"The CORE 320 study is the first prospective, multicenter study to examine the diagnostic accuracy of CT for assessing blockages in blood vessels and determining which of those blockages may be preventing the heart from getting adequate blood flow," says Joao A. C. Lima, M.D., senior author of the study and professor of medicine and radiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "We found an excellent correlation in results when we compared the 320-detector CT testing with the traditional means of assessment using a stress test with imaging and cardiac catheterization."

The study findings, says Lima, would apply to people who have chest pain but are not having a heart attack. Many people in that situation are sent to a cardiac catheterization laboratory for further evaluation with angiography, an invasive test to look for blockages in the coronary arteries using dye and special X-rays. About 30 percent of people who have such catheterization are found to have minimal disease or no blockage requiring an intervention to open or bypass the vessel.

Lima explains that a nuclear medicine stress test with imaging, known as SPECT, shows reduced blood flow to the heart without indicating the number or specific location of blockages.

The 381 patients who completed the study had traditional SPECT tests and invasive angiography. They also had two types of tests with a non-invasive 320-detector CT scanner. In the first CT test, the scanner was used to see the anatomy of vessels to assess whether and where there were blockages. That test is known as CTA, in which the "A" stands for angiography. Then, in a second CT test with the same machine, patients were given a vasodilator, a medicine that dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to the heart in ways similar to what happens during a stress test. The second test is called CTP, with the "P" standing for perfusion.

According to lead author Carlos E. Rochitte, M.D., a cardiologist at the Instituto do Coracao in Sao Paulo, Brazil, "We found that the 320-detector CT scanner allowed us to see the anatomy of the blockages as well as determine whether the blockages were causing a lack of perfusion to the heart. We were therefore able to correctly identify the patients who needed revascularization within 30 days of their evaluation."

"Many patients are sent for an angioplasty when they may not need it. Our ultimate goal is to have more certainty about which patients having chest pain -- without evidence of a heart attack -- need an invasive procedure to open an arterial blockage," says cardiologist Richard George, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a co-author of the study.

"The CTP test added significant information about the patients' conditions and boosted our ability to identify those whose blockages were severe enough to reduce blood flow to the heart," adds George, who developed the CTP method with Lima.

The 320-detector CT provides a complete picture of the heart by making just one revolution around the body. The researchers say the two tests combined -- CTA and CTP -- still produce less radiation than a scan with the 64-detector in widespread use today.

"In our study, the amount of radiation exposure to patients from the two 320-detector CT scanner tests was half the amount they received as a result of the traditional evaluation methods -- the angiogram and nuclear medicine stress test combined," says Lima.

The researchers will continue to follow the patients in the study for up to five years, looking for any heart-related events such as heart attacks, as well as hospital admissions, procedures or surgeries.

Hospitals that participated in the CORE 320 study are located in the United States, Germany, Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, Denmark, Japan and Singapore. Images obtained during the study were evaluated in core laboratories at Johns Hopkins and at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The study was sponsored by Toshiba Medical Systems.

Christian archbishop, priests flee Syria violence

Rebels in Syria claim new video shows their forces shooting down an Army helicopter as it was bombarding a Damascus neighborhood. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

The United States called reports of execution-style slayings by Syrian government forces "brutal" and a?Christian archbishop fled Syria with several priests after their offices were ransacked, news services reported on Monday.

U.S. State?Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that of more than 300 people killed some 150 had been killed in a single location around the Syrian capital Damascus. She cited reports from human rights activists that some were killed point-blank "in the most brutal way at the hands of the regime."?

Syrian opposition activists say as many as 600 people, including women and children, were killed by government forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya.

Also on Monday, fighter planes fired two rockets at targets on the eastern edge of Damascus, opposition activists said, the same day a military helicopter was apparently shot down by rebels.

It was the first time a warplane has struck areas close to the capital, an activist source told Reuters.

Video taken by activists showed a fighter plane swooping in on a built-up area. An explosion is heard and a voice says: "It is firing rockets."

320 found killed in Syria; rebels blame Assad?

Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in the Syrian capital, told The Associated Press that six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad. The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a grim reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

?

The number of people fleeing the fighting in Syria continues to rise with more than 200,000 leaving for neighboring countries because of continuing violence. Government forces continue to shell Aleppo and other suburbs of Damascus. Jonathan Miller Channel 4 Europe reports.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com?

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

Christians, too, are being caught up in the sectarian strife. The Catholic news agency Fides reported that the Melchite Greek Catholic archbishop of Aleppo, Jean-Clement Jeanbart, and a number of priests fled to Lebanon after their offices in Aleppo were ransacked

The Melchite Greek Catholic Church is a community of Middle Eastern Christians who are in full communion with Rome.

Fides said "unidentified groups who want to feed a religious war and drag the Syrian population into sectarian conflicts" attacked the Christian area in the old quarter of Aleppo.

A Byzantine Christian museum and an office of the Maronite Christian faith were also damaged, the report said.

There are several Christian groups in Syria, many of which have been in the region since pre-Islamic times.

Christians make up around 10 percent of the population and many have remained loyal to Assad, fearing that the majority Sunni Muslims would trample on religious rights if they took power.

However, some senior members of the opposition are also Christians.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Chrysler's Ram 1500 pickup truck relying on fuel economy, price

(Reuters) - Chrysler Group LLC is betting that better fuel economy and a moderate 1 percent increase in price from last year's models will help its line of 2013 Ram 1500 pickup trucks gain ground on industry leaders from Ford and Chevrolet.

The first redesign since 2009 for the biggest-selling vehicle in the Chrysler lineup has led to a pickup truck with more technology and less weight to go along with the usual pickup truck marketing features of power and towing ability, analysts who have driven the new Ram 1500 said.

The Ram 1500 goes on sale in the United States in October.

The starting price will be $23,585, including destination charges, Chrysler said on Friday. The highest-priced version in the Ram 1500 lineup will be a four-wheel-drive "Laramie Longhorn" crew cab at $48,415, including destination charges.

Chrysler, majority-owned by Italy's Fiat SpA , won't be able to topple the top-selling Ford Motor Co F-150 or the No. 2 General Motors Co Chevrolet Silverado in U.S. sales, but this improved Ram offering may narrow the gap, said analysts.

Edmunds.com director of vehicle testing, Dan Edmunds, said the Ram 1500, even an improved offering, faces an uphill battle against Ford and GM because pickup truck customers have fierce brand loyalty.

"There's definitely some technical benefits and there's some real benefits to the customer," Edmunds said. "They've got a good solid product here. The question is - does it overcome years of brand loyalty? That's hard to say."

Sales of the current 2012 versions of the Ram pickup trucks rose 23 percent this year through July in the United States, U.S. market, compared with a 12 percent rise for Ford F-Series pickup sales and a 3.5 percent gain for the Silverado pickups.

Still, Ford's pickup trucks made up 39.5 percent of the lucrative U.S. full-size pickup truck market, followed by 34.7 percent for GM's versions including the Silverado and the GMC Sierra, and 18.3 percent for Ram pickup trucks.

The GM total combines a 25.2-percent full-size pickup truck share of the Silverado and the 9.5 percent share of the Sierra.

The Ram 1500 "is not going to be a class leader in terms of sales volumes and Chrysler knows that," said Aaron Bragman, autos analyst with IHS Automotive. "They don't even have the capacity to do that. What they are is an alternative.

"Chrysler's goal is not to have a segment leader. It's goal is to make quite a bit of money, as all pickups do, and it does that quite well," said Bragman.

Pickup trucks have wider profit margins than do smaller vehicles, which makes the Ram 1500 an important product for Chrysler. Without Chrysler's profits, almost all from North America, parent Fiat would have shown a loss in the second quarter.

FUEL ECONOMY

Fuel economy, because of higher gasoline prices, has become a bigger factor for consumers when selecting a pickup truck in the past few years, said Bob Hegbloom, director of Ram Trucks for Chrysler.

So the Ram Truck brand and Chrysler will emphasize the version with a 3.6-liter, V6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission that can get 17 miles per gallon of gasoline in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, Hegbloom said, citing estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The primary model of the Ram 1500 lineup, the 4.7-liter with a V8 engine and a 6-speed automatic will get 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

The 3.6-liter version of the Ram 1500 with the 8-speed transmission will surpass the upcoming 2013 Ford F-150 pickup truck with a 3.7-liter V6 engine, which gets 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, according to Ford.

GM's 2013 Chevrolet Silverado has a version of that truck with a 5.3-liter, V8 engine that can get 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

What can you learn from Hamlet about weight loss?

?To be or not to be, that is the question?whether ?tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms against a sea of troubles and thus, by opposing, end them.?

That?s Hamlet talking to himself. That boy certainly did have a lot of troubles and he was paralyzed into inaction. It was only when his girlfriend killed herself that he pulled himself together and did what he had to do.

Do you have to wait for something really bad to happen before you do what?you know you must do? How many people do you know who got serious about weight loss, health, and fitness when they were told that they were prediabetic or diabetic? Or worse, people you know were told that, if they didn?t change their lives, they were going to have their feet cut off or go blind or lose kidney function or have a heart attack or have a stroke. Maybe there are people you know whose warning bell?was?a stroke! Maybe you know people whose warning was catastrophic failure of sexual function. Maybe it is just the fact that you can?t sleep (Anyone for sleep apnea? Can you only sleep wearing the ?hose nose?? If you have to ask, ?what does he mean by hose nose?? then you ? and your spouse ? have a treat waiting for you). Maybe the something really bad is just that you can?t stand up; you can?t walk without your back being pulled completely apart by your gut; you can?t walk more than a city block without sweating, panicky exhaustion; you can?t fit behind the wheel of your car; you certainly can?t hustle through an airport to make a connecting flight. Are you getting to the point where you want to rent the electric wheelchair in the grocery store? And God help you (and the people that depend on you) if you ever have to deal with any sort of emergency situation.

So, nobody has told you that these scenarios apply to you? You see these things all around you and don?t ever think that you are headed that way?

Be a man! Be a woman!?Be a father! Be a mother!?Be a leader! See what is happening to you!?Take action now!?But I?m just a kid.?30% of all children in America are overweight or obese, prediabetic or diabetic.?Young people can change the easiest and get the best result when they do change.

Act. Do not be acted upon. Just finding someone to tell you what drugs will keep your disease factors under control will not solve your problem. Real problems have real solutions. You need a total body transformation program. Only you can make life better. I have been taught that all things temporal are spiritual and all things spiritual are temporal. It takes character to deal with your stuff, but your character needs some support. You need character development. This is particularly true when things that are bad for you are the only things that give you the pleasure you crave. There is a life of happiness through health,?but you have to choose it, and for that you need help.?Get the help you need today and check out the?Best Fat Burner?way.

More easing seen as China factory survey disappoints

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's manufacturing sector contracted at its sharpest pace in nine months in August, according to a survey showing falling export orders and rising inventories, a signal that more policy stimulus may be needed to engineer a second half pick-up in growth.

As calls grew louder from analysts and investors for further measures from Beijing to support the economy, China's central bank on Thursday completed its largest weekly injection of funds into the financial system in seven months - a move traders saw as a substitute for a cut in banks' required reserve ratio.

The HSBC Flash China manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) - a preliminary read-out that provides an early peek at data for August - fell to 47.8 this month, its lowest level since November and well down from July's final figure of 49.3.

"Inventory numbers are the highest on record. Orders to inventory are the lowest since December 2008. Foreign orders to inventory are the lowest since January 2009. It's very hard to put a positive spin on anything within the data," said Robert Rennie, chief currency strategist at Westpac Bank In Sydney.

"Bottom line - a very poor update with some very poor China data to come."

Falling demand from debt-ridden Europe, China's single biggest export market, has put the Chinese economy under pressure, with the ripples now being felt throughout east Asia.

Japan said on Wednesday that exports slumped the most in six months in July as shipments to Europe and China tumbled. Exports from Taiwan, a key part of the global technology supply chain, fell for a fifth straight month in July and South Korea, home to major carmakers, computer chip and flat-screen producers, recorded its sharpest export fall in July in nearly three years.

Sixth consecutive quarters of slowing Chinese growth have also taken a toll on commodities markets, with falling prices and an uncertain outlook prompting miner BHP Billiton to shelve a $20 billion expansion project in Australia.

The Australian dollar wobbled after the latest data from the country's single biggest export market, while Australia's resources minister on Thursday declared that "the resources boom is over.

MORE EASING SEEN

The HSBC PMI has been below the 50 mark that divides expansion from contraction for 10 straight months, and the index is now at levels rarely seen since the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.

But China is loath to unleash a massive stimulus package as it did in 2008. Instead, it has chosen to open more sectors to private capital to help fund new investment projects.

"To achieve the stated policy goal of stabilizing growth and the jobs market, Beijing must step up policy easing to lift infrastructure investment in the coming months," Qu Hongbin, chief China economist at HSBC in Hong Kong said in a statement accompanying the index.

China has been "fine tuning" policies to keep growth on track without releasing curbs on the property sector.

Beijing has fast-tracked fiscal spending on key projects, cut the amount of cash banks must keep as reserves (RRR) to free an estimated 1.2 trillion yuan for lending ($190 billion) and, in the space of four weeks in June and July, twice lowered benchmark lending rates.

Traders and analysts had widely expected that another RRR cut was imminent, and many analysts still believe a cut is needed to give banks the liquidity they need to boost lending.

"I would cut RRR tomorrow," Ting Lu, economist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, told Reuters.

Instead, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) appears to be using an alternative policy tool, injecting a net 278 billion yuan ($43.77 billion) into the interbank money market this week, the largest net injection since early January.

The PBOC's decision to inject the funds through open market operations, rather than through a cut in bank reserves, indicates its concern about stoking inflation.

House prices have now risen for two straight months on a monthly basis, following eight consecutive monthly declines resulting from Beijing's campaign to bring prices down.

Employing open market operations offered the central bank more flexibility and precision, said Ma Yun, an economist at CEBM, a Chinese macro-economic consultancy, because the effect was temporary and could be targeted at specific banks in need of liquidity. By contrast, an RRR cut affects all banks and is effectively permanent unless the central bank moves actively to reverse it, so can have an inflationary affect.

Evidence has been mounting in recent weeks that China's economy is struggling to overcome strong global headwinds, with economists' expectations of a second half pick-up being pushed steadily further back.

Chinese government data last month showed July exports rose just 1 percent from a year earlier and that new loans were at a 10-month low. Factory output rose at its lowest pace in three years and pricing power faded.

That raised the specter of a seventh straight quarter of slowing growth in July-September, after the second-quarter expanded 7.6 percent from a year earlier, only just above Beijing's official 7.5 percent target.

The prospect of unemployed workers taking to the streets is a top worry for China's ruling Communist Party, particularly ahead of a once-in-a-decade leadership transition this autumn.

However, unemployment levels have not yet come close to those of the winter of 2008-2009. At least 20 million jobs were lost in export-oriented coastal provinces when global trade ground to a halt then. Some estimates put the total as high as 40 million.

Kathie Lee Gifford: Taylor Swift Did So Crash Wedding!

Kathie Lee Gifford has waded into the controversy surrounding Taylor Swift?s appearance with boyfriend Conor Kennedy at the wedding of Liam Kerr and Kyle Kennedy. Gifford was there, and Taylor crashed it,? the Today Show host said.

Swift reportedly caused an uproar when she was twice asked by mother of the bride, Victoria Gifford Kennedy, not to show up at the wedding.

?They came anyway,? the mother of the bride told The Boston Herald. ?I personally went up to Ms Swift, whose entrance distracted the entire event, and asked her as nicely as I could to leave.

?It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me,? she said.

A rep for the 22-year-old country queen heatedly denied the story. The rep said Swift was invited and bride Kyle, daughter of Victoria Kennedy, graciously welcomed her. Conor is Kyle?s first cousin. Their grandfather is the late Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968 while running for president.

Gifford was at the wedding because she is married to former football great Frank Gifford who is Victoria?s father. ?I was just a guest at that wedding. [Kyle] is actually my granddaughter by marriage,? Gifford said on Thursday?s show.

?The truth is, because I was there, Vicki?s account is accurate.? Taylor and Conor were asked to leave ?twice,? she confirmed.

Gifford said Victoria told her, ?I?m really not happy about this.?

?It?s the bride?s day, and that was Vicki?s other concern. ?This is my daughter?s day and I would appreciate it if you would not come,?? Gifford said.

Among other things, Gifford?s comments highlight the fallacy of Web sites like GossipCop. It can?t seem to figure out that it?s often a tool for reps who frequently lie for their clients to kill or dispute embarrassing reports.

The site claimed that the Swift story was nothing more than rumor.

Victoria said Conor was invited but never RSVP?d. As such, the wedding wasn?t prepared to handle the commotion that Swift?s appearance caused because she wasn?t expected. Fans filled the lobby of the wedding hotel when they learned Swift was there.

Swift, however, is apparently still on good terms with family Matriarch Ethyl Kennedy. Chalk it up to a case of Kennedy entitlement clashing with celebrity entitlement.

Finding The Good In You Through Personal Development ...

Do you want to improve your life? To help you get started, check out the tips below.

Pinpoint exactly what is blocking your progress. A lot of people are unable to do this without help. However, when you can find out what your weaknesses are, this becomes the first step in dealing with them and, eventually, changing them. If you can successfully remove a few obstacles, you might just see a clearer path to your future.

Keep your limitations in mind and do not push too hard to reach your goals, especially when it comes to physical self-improvement. While no one can argue the importance of giving 100 percent, you must nonetheless take care of yourself. You still need to take care of your body when trying to achieve a goal. Short-changing your body in order to meet personal development goals is a terribly counter-productive form of self-improvement.

Your library and bookstore probably have an entire section devoted to self-help. The best of these types of books can truly give you new advice and ideas that work for improving your specific life situations and challenges. Many personal development books are poorly written, so pick one that has good reviews.

TIP! Stress is an enemy of happiness. While experiencing stress, our entire body is affected in both physical and mental ways.

Wherever you happen to be, when a great idea strikes your brain, write it down. Carry paper and a pen around with you. Record as much as you can when your idea hits so that you can flesh it out later at a more convenient time.

You need to decide what type of lifestyle would suit you best, then you can set goals that can realistically be attained. Everybody has a weakness, but if you discover what yours are and then strive to banish them, that makes you the better person.

Personal development begins when you identify what you value the most. Value your personal best and make that important to your life.

Always have an emergency fund. For many people any unexpected expense results in more charges on their credit card. If you save just a little each week, you will have built up your emergency fund in no time. This fund can be crucial in both your immediate and distant future as you work toward decreasing debt, rather than accumulating it.

TIP! One great personal development goal you can set is to practice being more selfless. Your inner character will benefit greatly from helping others, and making sacrifices to do it.

Taking some small risks can help you stay happy. Most people avoid risks because they don?t want to fail or feel bad about their capabilities. This means that they become stuck in a rut where they do the same things over and over, and do not find fulfillment. Taking risks requires a lot of courage, which will help you become happy in the long run.

Hang out with people who are similar to you. If you are surrounded by people who are negative or who do not believe in you, eventually you might start to believe them. So keeping company with positive people with positive outlooks will benefit you in many ways.

Are you a heavy drinker? Is smoking or anything else harming your body? You should treat your body like a temple, because that?s what it is. If you are serious about improving your life, it is important to eliminate the habits which cause your body harm. Assess your life and what habits you have, and see if there are any that you could work on omitting.

Try and find new ways to challenge yourself. Trying new things is a way to broaden your horizons. You could acquire new skills and learn new things. You may even start a new model by doing something that has never been done before. Strive to create something new, rather than accomplishing something that?s already been done.

TIP! Try to find a book or article that encourages or uplifts you. A religious text might work for some people, while others may prefer a book that contains inspirational quotes.

Learn what others have done that has made them successful. Don?t think of your personal development as a journey with an end. Think of it as a permanent lifestyle change. It is always beneficial to hear the stories about roads traveled by other individuals, especially very successful individuals.

If you take proper care of your physical needs, you will get the maximum benefit from your personal development approach. A good diet, a lot of sleep and activity will give you more energy and help you get a healthier and better-looking body. Though many take these simple things for granted, they are often hard to incorporate into personal habits.

Are you still searching for the love of your life? Try using Internet dating sites to meet people. Four out of ten couples meet online these days. That perfect someone could be looking for you right now. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

TIP! If you are falling sort and not meeting goals, step back and look at your issues. Compare your goals with the goals of others that you can research online.

Realizing your own self-worth is a crucial component of personal development. Believe that you should do the best for yourself. Think of your personal development as a lifestyle change and continue making new goals for yourself.

As you?ve just read, it?s not as frightening to better your life as you may think. Keep in mind the fantastic benefits you can gain from developing your life into something you love

P.S.-If you love personal development and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging with it, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions === Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass personal development plan in the industry?s history!

Antarctic ice sheet quakes shed light on ice movement and earthquakes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Analysis of small, repeating earthquakes in an Antarctic ice sheet may not only lead to an understanding of glacial movement, but may also shed light on stick slip earthquakes like those on the San Andreas fault or in Haiti, according to Penn State geoscientists.

"No one has ever seen anything with such regularity," said Lucas K. Zoet, recent Penn State Ph. D. recipient, now a postdoctoral fellow at Iowa State University. "An earthquake every 25 minutes for a year."

The researchers looked at seismic activity recorded during the Transantarctic Mountains Seismic Experiment from 2002 to 2003 on the David Glacier in Antarctica, coupled with data from the Global Seismic Network station Vanda. They found that the local earthquakes on the David Glacier, about 20,000 identified, were predominantly the same and occurred every 25 minutes give or take five minutes.

The researchers note in the current Nature Geoscience that, "The remarkable similarity of the waveforms ? indicates that they share the same source location and source mechanisms." They suggest that "the same subglacial asperity repeatedly ruptures in response to steady loading from the overlying ice, which is modulated by stress from the tide at the glacier front."

"Our leading idea is that part of the bedrock is poking through the ductile till layer beneath the glacier," said Zoet.

The researchers have determined that the asperity -- or hill -- is about a half mile in diameter.

The glacier, passing over the hill, creates a stick slip situation much like that on the San Andreas fault. The ice sticks on the hill and stress gradually builds until the energy behind the obstruction is high enough to move the ice forward. The ice moves in a step-by-step manner rather than smoothly.

But motion toward the sea is not the only thing acting on the ice streaming from David glacier. Like most glaciers near oceans, the edge of the ice floats out over the water and the floating ice is subject to the action of tides.

"When the tide comes in it pushes back on the ice, making the time between slips slightly longer," said Sridhar Anandakrishnan, professor of geoscience. "When the tide goes out, the time between slips decreases."

However, the researchers note that the tides are acting at the ground line, a long way from the location of the asperity and therefore the effects that shorten or lengthen the stick slip cycle are delayed.

"This was something we didn't expect to see," said Richard B. Alley, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences. "Seeing it is making us reevaluate the basics."

He also noted that these glacial earthquakes, besides helping glaciologists understand the way ice moves, can provide a simple model for the stick slip earthquakes that occur between landmasses.

"We have not completely explained how ice sheets flow unless we can reproduce this effect," said Alley. "We can use this as a probe and look into the physics so we better understand how glaciers move."

Before 2002, this area of the David glacier flowed smoothly, but then for nearly a year the 20-minute earthquake intervals occurred and then stopped. Something occurred at the base of the ice to start and then stop these earthquakes.

"The best idea we have is that during those 300 days, a dirty patch of ice was in contact with the mount, changing the way stress was transferred," said Zoet. "The glacier is experiencing earthquakes again, although at a different rate. It would be nice to study that."

Unfortunately, the seismographic instruments that were on the glacier in 2002 no longer exist, and information is coming from only one source at the moment.

Gaming teaches local students problem-solving skills : The ...

August 21, 2012

By Lillian Tucker

Video games at school sounds like the dream of many teenagers, but for many in the Issaquah School District designing and having them in the classroom became a reality last year.

Students work together to create a video game.

Through a partnership between the district and Microsoft, students taking Introduction to Computer Science last spring at Skyline, Issaquah and Liberty high schools, got to design, program and ultimately play video games all in the name of learning. And starting this year, the course will also be offered at Tiger Mountain Community High School.
For Kevin Houghton, math and engineering teacher at Issaquah High, this was the first time video games made an appearance on his syllabi.
?A lot of these kids, good or bad, go home after school and plunk down in front of an Xbox,? he said, explaining that when Microsoft offered to buy the class a set of Xbox Kinects, he was excited. ?Kids need stimuli. They are not just going to sit there and listen to an hour-long lecture? pretty soon they were making video games and the kids were just pumped.?
Classes took part during the first hour of the school day and got help from volunteer software professionals, who gave instruction under the supervision of the certified teacher.
At Skyline, Colin Miller of Sammamish, who during the day is a product unit manager at Microsoft, walked students, step-by-step, through the process of programming their own versions of classic games like Mario, Pong and Galaga.
With objectives like creating an annotated character that responds to keyboard clicks, the students used Scratch, a programming language that allows beginners to dive in without having to learn the rules like putting a semi colon at the end of every line, Miller explained.
?It also helps kids to not feel intimidated by these things,? said Miller. ?I got the comment that ?okay, now I realize that this isn?t impossible to learn.? It breaks down those barriers and gives those kids the exposure to computer science.?
In Houghton?s classroom at Issaquah High, students were split into groups of four. While each team was given a different theme, the requirements were all the same. Each game had to have a menu and help screen; it had to be timed and built for two players. Using the Kinects it had to respond to body movements and there needed to be a point system; the list goes on.
?It was really just about tying all these concepts together: human-computer interaction, graphical parts, the logic itself,? said Michael Hawker of Microsoft, who volunteered at Issaquah High. ?A major issue in computer science is ?how do you break the problem down into these little bits so that they can be run at the same time??? it was pretty involved. It was huge project but a lot of fun.?
In the end, students developed video games like one where players moved their arms around to steer a helicopter through approaching rings.
In another game the goalie has to block incoming soccer balls that, over time, increase in numbers and speed. Other games themes included a bat cave, food fight, math and fishing.
?These kids were hit pretty hard with the fact that it?s cool but it?s pretty hard. You have to take care of a lot of details. You don?t just click the button and shoot a monster,? said Houghton. Many of his students, he added, learned a valuable lesson that most don?t figure out until college. ?I talked to a lot of them who finished the class and thought ?this is so great I am going to do this a profession? and some said ?wow, this is not what I thought it would be.?
And that?s OK with Miller and Hawker, who volunteered in the classrooms through the TEALS (technology, education and literacy in schools) program, which was put in place by techies to help student?s develop an interest in computer science.
?It?s just a staggering number difference between the demand for the field and the people going into it,? said Hawker. ?Even if you not going in to computer science, it?s such an interesting skill set in terms of problem solving and reasoning and how you tackle these problems that it makes sense for these other fields.?
