?Motorola Mobility has filed a patent infringement case against Apple, claiming the company is breaching eight of its patents.
The filing is with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and seeks the usual damages and a ban on imports into the USA of any devices found infringing the patents.
Motorola Mobility said that it had been in talks with Apple to secure a license before it took legal action but was unable to secure a settlement.
Apple counters that Motorola Mobility -- now owned by Google -- had made unreasonable demands. The argument may have precedent though, as Motorola has attempted to demand higher royalities for standards-essential patents than would be usual, if the user had been infringing them prior to signing a license.
However, Apple's argument than also suggests that I knows it was infringing the patents in question, and the debate was simply about the royalties due. In such a situation, the US ITC would have to find in Motorola's favour, and could ban imports of Apple's iPhone and iPad.
One of the patents in dispute relates to how the speech recognition system, Siri works. Another covers Wi-Fi use in a smartphone.
Apple has also sued Motorola Mobility over Android patent infringements in a number of countries.
